In April 2014, the BMJ reported that four elite women athletes with 5-ARD were subjected to sterilization and "partial clitoridectomies" in order to compete in sport. The authors noted that "partial clitoridectomy" was "not medically indicated, does not relate to real or perceived athletic “advantage,"" relating to elevated androgen levels. The athletes were all from developing countries where lifetime access to hormone replacement may prove elusive. [9] Intersex advocates regard this intervention as "a clearly coercive process". [10]

Sebum also provides a growth medium for Cutibacterium (formerly Propionibacterium ) acnes , a bacterium that resides in pilosebaceous follicles and contributes to the inflammatory response in acne vulgaris ( picture 2 ) [ 2 ]. The correlation between the normal rise in serum androgen levels and sebum production in the prepubertal period and the typical age of onset of acne (also the prepubertal period) supports an important role for androgens in acne. This importance of androgens is also supported by the occurrence of acne as a clinical feature of hyperandrogenism. (See "Adrenal hyperandrogenism", section on 'Clinical manifestations' and "Clinical manifestations of polycystic ovary syndrome in adults", section on 'Hyperandrogenism' .)

While theoretical mechanisms of action and epidemiological data point to a potential platelet inhibitory effect of ALA, 40 human studies have not shown a consistent antiplatelet effect. 8 When 15 hypercholesterolemic subjects consumed 3 slices of bread containing flaxseed plus 15 g of ground flaxseed daily for 3 months, thrombin-stimulated platelet aggregation decreased with the flax supplement. 22 Another study reported that 40 g of flaxseed oil over 23 days produced an increase in the platelet EPA to arachidonic acid ratio, which suggests that flaxseed oil may decrease the tendency of platelets to aggregate. 41
